Half of a yellow Sun was exquisitely written. That would be the word. It was ten steps higher in every literary ramification than Chimamanda's first book: Purple Hibiscus. It was bold and very classical not leaving out the originality of the Nigerian origins.
A love story with the harsh grippings of the 1966 pogrom and the Biafran war in its back ground. It resounds the Nigerian history that so many citizens hardly know or care to know. Therefore giving a subtle platform in passing the horror and ambience of what the country exuded at that time.
The characters had this beautiful eccentricity. For instance;Kainene(a very beautiful name) which lost its beauty in the movie. Richard who felt very inferior and secure with her. Odenigbo's renegade style and thier deep intricacies with the country at that time.
The tittle which portrayed the half of a yellow sun on the biafran flag was a strong indication that the direction of the writer's opinion was unwavered in the idea in which she wished to conveyed.
The movie on the other hand was a caricature of the book. If you had read the book, you would definitely hate the movie. Though, this is largely the case in most Novel turned Movies. Her strong message which was the crux of the book, should have also been what the movie was centered. It rather gave a fast-play and therefore potrayed a far cry of the subject.
Instead, the movie; told a love story and down played the real idea. The characters were less absorbent into the happenings of thier surroundings. One, would not appreciate the idea of a history conveyed very simply and enticing enough to probe. After seeing the movie.
Nevertheless , what caught my attention was how they were able to get an english lady to play an Igbo character that was advocative of her tribe and yet couldnt even pronounce her own name correctly or any Igbo name in the movie. Was it low budgeting, a downplay of our history and origins or just sheer neglect?
You would need to read the book to appreciate the story behind the movie.
