Chimamanda Adichie continues to be scintillating and bold. Ifemula is drawn as the protagonist in this book where she gives us a picture of her views of America, Europe and Our country Nigeria. Ifemula falls in love with Obinze whom she met in secondary school, his character being very deep and one of the most interesting. She also meets his mother whom prior to meeting her she wondered Whose African mother tells her Son to bring his girlfriend home. She likens the mother to "Onyeka Owenu". Drawn by his mother's personality there was a comparison between her parents and Obinze's mother whom was also a lover of books.
There was the impact of one of the coups in Nigeria on Ifemula's aunty's affair with the general. Because of the University Strike in the country, She was convinced by her Aunt to take a scholarship exam which she passed. This was how Ifemula landed in America which she heard from Obinze back in the day and wondered whether it would ever be touched. When she first went to New York, Obinze called and asked her what she thought and she said " its beautiful but it is not heaven" Ifemula rose from being broke, depressed to writing a famous blog about race and the achievement of being a fellow at the University of Princeton.
I adored the writing of Americanah more than the story itself, The thick conversations in the salon, dinner party that showed interesting perspectives was intelligent the structure of sentence made me wish the book had no end and the detailed structure of the setting even while encompassing different scopes. When the woman in the salon asked " What is the book about?" and Ifemula wondered why people thought books where about a particular thing." There was the display of books, classic book, regular fictions and also Obinze telling Ifemula about real books.
The story is able to brake the seemingly complicated issues down for even young minds to enjoy. The work as it is not unbelievable it is totally believable and the back and forth movement was classic.
Ifemula then comes back to Nigeria, after gaining success and a green card abroad. The story quickly entered a fast pace on her observation in lagos, O I felt like she was in a rush to end it all. Where she met Obinze again and they went out on few dates, where they sang "Obi mo" by Obi won. It captured comtemporary Nigerian Music in very special ways and I think that brings memories to us at home. he decided to divorce his wife to get married to her. I thought , this was unrealistic in Nigeria because ; We Nigerians don't just Up and Divorce. There must not be a happy ending.
"ceiling", Chimamanda continues to prove her prowess as one of the most knowledgeable and down to earth writers ever lived.
